At least 15,000 students are set to receive degrees, diplomas, masters, doctorates at Makerere University's 68th graduation ceremony set to kick off today Tuesday and run until Friday.
According to the university's Chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, the statistic is the largest number of students graduating at one congregation in the history of the Ivory tower.
Sixty nine students will to be awarded with PhDs. Nine hundred and eighty will be awarded masters degrees, 96 Post Graduate Diplomas, 133 undergraduate Diplomas and 13,966 bachelor’s degrees. Overall, 7751 males will graduate alongside 7,493 females.
Today, students from the colleges of agricultural and environmental sciences, education and external studies, as well as natural sciences will graduate.
On Wednesday, students from the colleges of Business and management sciences, computing and information sciences, health sciences, veterinary medicine, animal resources and bio security will be graduating. While on Thursday, it will be graduation for students from Makerere University Business School, MUBS.
On Friday, colleges of engineering, design, art and technology, humanities and social sciences, and school of law will be graduating.
But as the ceremony got underway this morning, at least 20 students from the Makerere University Jinja campus remained cursing after missing this year’s graduation ceremony due to missing marks.
Vice Chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe says that the students will be given transcripts once their issues are resolved.
Nawangwe blamed this on use of the old grading system of the University which did not tally with the new system. He apologized to their parents saying the University will rectify the problem.
In his speech this morning, Nawangwe said the university is redeveloping dilapidated sports facilities. They want to upgrade the main sports grounds into a multi-purpose stadium.
