Makerere University management has lifted what it terms as a temporary suspension of evening classes by the school of law after thorough consultations. Classes are expected to resume today.

The development was communicated by vice chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe after a meeting between management and leaders of the law society last night.

Prof. Nawangwe blamed the misunderstanding on poor communication. He added that council has resolved to compensate staff working on evening programs, while management would continue working on modalities to implement the decision.

He appealed to students and lecturers to stay calm.

Last week, Makerere University Law School suspended the evening programme citing failure by management to address the issue of the allowances for evening lecturers.
The law school announced the suspension in January 23rd circular addressed to students on the evening program.

"Staff decided to suspend the teaching of the evening program until the university management addresses the school of Law's concerns regarding the services offered by the staff on that program," reads the statement.

Consequently, the law society leaders asked day program students to boycott lectures until the issue was sorted.

However, the vice chancellor did not address the fresh tension following threats by lecturers in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences- CHUSS to withdraw their services from the evening program over none payment of their extra load allowances.

They are expected to hold an emergency meeting today Wednesday January 31st, 2018 to decide their next course of action. The latest to withdraw their services from the program are lecturers from the Department of Journalism and Communication under the School of Journalism and communication.
