The ministry of education is in a process to recruit 2000 more science teachers to help improve performance in science subjects.
The development was revealed by John Crysostom Muyingo, the minister of education for higher learning, during the release of 2017 Uganda certificate of education results at office of the prime minister in Kampala.
Muyingo’s announcement came after Dan Odongo, the uneb executive secretary indicated that there was poor performance in science and mathematics by majority of candidates.
“Passes at the distinction and credit levels in physics and chemistry are below 21%. Only about 45% reach the minimum competency level” he told the minister.
It was also indicated that as in the previous years, candidates experienced problems in the handling of apparatus during practical tests as well as making and recording observations and drawing conclusions from those observations.
The minister explained that more teachers are needed to help students learn practically, instead of the usual cram work, which continues to fuel failure among students.
