For the past more than 4 months, students at Gulu University have not studied due to what has been termed as the longest sit down strike by academic staff at the campus.
The strike has however finally come to an end as of yesterday, Wednesday.
In a meeting held on Wednesday afternoon, the staff voted to call off the strike after they were assured of the availability of the 800 million shillings extra load allowances over which they declared the strike in October last year.
Prof. George Ladaa Openjuru, the university vice chancellor told a lecturers; assembly before they voted that the money had already been disbursed by government. He said the university received 1.2 billion shillings out of the two billion they asked for to reopen the university and administer end of first semester exams.
Chairperson of Gulu University Academic Staff Association Professor David Kitara Lagoro, told journalists after the meeting that they are satisfied that the money will now be laid.
It was later announced by the vice chancellor, that students will report back on February 14 for their end of semester one exams.
