After violent clashes and running battles with Uganda police force officers, Kyambogo University students finally settled and decided that the Forum for Democratic Change-FDC party candidate, German Amanya would be their Guild president.
Amanya was declared elected last evening at the Student's Centre, the official tally centre. The announcement was made by Kyambogo University Electoral Commission Chairperson, Robert Asiimwe.
According to the results, Amanya garnered 3,701 votes of the 8,451 ballots cast. Paul Opesen came second with 2,137 votes followed by Eddy Akena in third position with 1,013 votes.
In fifth position came Joel Ssemuju with 716 votes followed by Richard Mugisha with 434 votes, Haruna Kilenzi 211 votes, Abraham Muhumuza 189 votes, Nasif Lubanga 184 votes while Frederick Okot trailed the pack with 107 votes.
Amanya after being declared winner, pledged to improve the lighting system and sanitation in the university. He also said he will lobby for exchange programs for students to other universities as well as agitate for the introduction of supplementary exams for final year students who get retakes.
On Tuesday, the situation went out of hand when the university management postponed the polls, saying the Electoral Commission wasn't ready. Police fired live bullets and teargas to disperse angry students.
Several students were arrested and locked up briefly at Jinja Road Police station. According to Andrew Mugarura, the Chief Security Officer Kyambogo University, all students were released.
