The organizing committee of this year’s 3rd June Uganda Martyrs Day has announced that there will be a walk in the footsteps of the Martrys as has been the norm in past celebrations.

The development was revealed by His Grace Emmanuel Obbo, the Arch Bishop of Tororo Arch Diocese during a press conference at Nsambya Catholic secretariat this morning.

The Arch Bishop announced that the walk of faith which shall take place on Saturday May 12th 2018 has been organized in collaboration with the Uganda Episcopal conference and Uganda tourism board.

The walk is under the theme; “Let us walk in the light of God as a family.” It will be led by youth who are being mobilized by the Tororo Arch Diocese and National youth chaplains.

The one day pilgrimage was initiated in 2016, and as always, this year’s walk shall begin from Munyonyo Martyrs Shrine where the Martyrs were condemned and end at St. Matia Mulumba Church, Old Kampala.

According to His Grace Obbo, the purpose of this walk is to have Christians experience the Martrys’ pain and last moments on earth. “I encourage all of you to come and make this pilgrimage” he said.

The Arch Diocese of Tororo was chosen to lead this year’s celebrations at Namugongo Martyrs Shrine. The preparations require Shillings 720 million. Millions of pilgrims are expected to trek from different parts of Uganda and other countries. From Tororo alone, about 4,000 pilgrims have already been registered to walk, and more people are still coming in for registration according to the Arch Bishop.

According to the Uganda Catholic Secretariat, they have received notifications from Tanzania, Malawi, Kenya, South Africa and Nigeria as countries sending in pilgrims, while more notifications are expected to come in May.

Pilgrims from Tororo will begin their walk on Sunday 20th May and will be flagged off by their Arch Bishop, His Grace Emmanuel Obbo.
