Trouble has befallen a police officer, PC William Ssengendo attached to Jinja Road Police Station after he was arrested for shooting dead a civilian.
Police Constable Ssengendo, is alleged to have shot Innocent Ongayo in the leg in the wee hours of Wednesday morning after he responded to bar fight at bar known as Nakawa Inn located in Nakawa Division. The victim later died at Mulago Hospital.
The officer went to the hangout after receiving a call about a bar fight. But according to some of the statements recorded from the witnesses, Ongayo is alleged to have attacked Ssengendo who was trying to stop the fight.
"He (Ongayo) grabbed the gun and started fighting with Ssengendo. They fought for about five minutes before the police officer pushed Ongayo. He insisted on fighting back and its when the police officer shot him," reads part of the statement from a bar attendant.
According to the Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire, investigations into the matter have been instituted.
"We just want to understand what happened, whether its murder or it was in self-defense," Owoyesigyire said.
PC Ssengedo, is currently detained at Jinja Road Police Station, and is yet to record a statement, while Ongayo's body has been taken to Mulago mortuary pending a post mortem report.
