Ministry of health has confirmed a cholera outbreak in some parts of Kampala, warning the public to be vigilant.
The development was communicated in a letter issued by Henry G Mwebesa, the Ag. Director General Health Services, dated today 7th May 2018.
In the letter, Dr. Mwebesa explains that a total of 7 cases have been confirmed and are currently undergoing treatment at the China-Uganda Friendship Hospital, CUFH Naguru.
Three of the confirmed cases are from one family residing in Mpigi district while the other four are from two families residing in Kalerwe, Kampala.
According to Dr. Mwebesa, in order to avert further spread of the disease, two isolation wards have been set up at Mulago national referral hospital and CUFH, nagulu.
He further appealed to members of the public to boil all drinking water or add chlorine, water guard or aqua tab, open the water drainage channels around homes and drain stagnant water, wash hands with soap and clean water after using the toilet and before eating food, cook food thoroughly and eat it while still hot.
Dr. Mwebesa further cautions the public to always wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly with clean water before eating them, and where possible, peel before eating. Avoid eating cold food or drinking fluids packed in used plastic bottles or buveera, collect water for household use from National water and sewage cooperation taps and avoid water from wells or springs because they may be contaminated by the disease causing organisms.
And most importantly, seek early treatment from nearest health facility upon onset of symptoms. “The public is further urged to be vigilant and report any suspected cholera cases to the nearest health facility, or call our toll free line, 0800-100-066” Dr.Mwebesa urged.
Cholera is a serious acute infectious disease characterized by watery diarrhea and vomiting. It kills a person within hours. Cholera is spread through eating and drinking food contaminated with feaces of an infected person.
The new outbreak, is expected to have been caused by the heavy rains being experienced by the country at the moment.
