Muslims in the country have been urged to emulate the Christian believers and move to honour Muslims who also died as Martyrs for their faith.
The call was made by President Yoweri Museveni while addressing the crowds that turned up for Uganda Martyrs celebrations at the Namugongo Catholic Martyrs shrine.
In his speech, the president urged Christians in Ugandan to note that while it is important to enrich their faith, it is equally crucial to think about household income generation and household poverty eradication.
Mr. Museveni was addressed pilgrims at the Catholic Martyrs’ Shrine after he and his wife, Janet Museveni, had earlier attended prayers at the neighbouring Church of Uganda Shrine.
Celebrations at the Catholic Shrine ran under the theme ‘Let us walk in the light of God as a family.’ Tororo Archdiocesan Prelate the Most Rev. Emmanuel Obbo and pilgrims from his See, animated the High Mass for the occasion. The Archdiocese last animated celebrations at Namugongo in 1998 under the theme of ‘Uganda Martyrs our encouragement in faith.’
Archbishop Obbo called upon the people of Uganda to shun evil in families, violence, moral decadence, culture of revenge and champion reconciliation in order to lead transformed lives.
Host Archbishop Cyprian Kizito Lwanga of Kampala Archdiocese called for honouring the gift of life and urged Ugandans to live as one family.
The Chairman of the Uganda Episcopal Conference and Gulu Archbishop, John Baptist Odama, called for unity of Ugandans as one family.
He thanked visiting Bishops and delegations from Tanzania including Mama Maria Nyerere, the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Africa, Malawi, Zimbabwe, France and elsewhere for honouring the Ugandan Martyrs with their presence.
