Police has warned members of the public who are spreading hate and threatening messages to stop or face the law.
The development comes after several people on social media that were trending the #FreeBobiWine claimed they had received messages threatening them to stop, or be dealt with.
In a letter authored on Sunday evening, SP Patrick Onyango, the Deputy Police spokesperson warned that sending or circulating hate messages is criminal and that police is mandated to protect Ugandans.
“We are committed to safeguarding life and property at all times. If you have received any hate/threatening messages either through verbal or social media, please report to this number, 0707712019” he wrote.
Onyango added that hate speech and messages contravene Computer Misuse Act 2015 Section 25 and The Penal Code Act Section 51(1) (a&b) incitement to violence. It reads;
Any person who without lawful axcuse, prints, publishes or to any assembly makes statements indicatring or implying that it would be
incumbent or desirable;
to do any acts calculated to bring death or physical injury to any person, class or community of persons or to do any acts calculated to lead to destruction or damage to any property, commits an offence and is liable to imprisonment for three years.
