The Uganda National Bureau of standards has clarified on media reports that there are fake eggs on market, explaining that the story was inaccurate as the issue was on packaging.
In a recent market surveillance report, the standards’ body found sweets on sale that were in packages that resemble eggs. A local daily however run a story on Monday October 29th 2018 indicating that the team from UNBS had found fake eggs on market.
This rather confusing packaging got officials from UNBS worried as writings on the packages were in Chinese and unless one could read the language, they are unable to tell the expiry date.
In a letter released this afternoon, UNBS says there are currently no reports of fake eggs from anyone.
“We have not received complaints or come across cases of fake eggs on the market. However, as a statutory body with mandate to enforce standards to protect the health and safety of consumers and the environment against dangerous substandard products, we would like to urge any person with information that can help us in our investigations to report on our toll free lines” they wrote.
The body adds that fighting substandard products needs a concerted effort involving UNBS working together with manufacturers, traders, consumers and other government agencies. “We would like to urge the public to always look out for UNBS Distinctive Mark as a quality assurance that a locally manufactured product meets the required standards.”
