As Makerere University prepares for the 69th graduations ceremony slated to take place January 2019, all graduands have been warned against purchasing gowns from undesignated vendors.

In a letter written and signed by Alfred Namoah the academic registrar, students are only expected to purchase gowns from the university vendor who already started issuing them down the basement of the senate building.

In the past, students would buy gowns from outside vendors in Wandegeya at as low as 50,000 shillings. They now say the 100,000 set by university is too much money.

According to Namoah, only those that have paid graduation fees including the gowns should have their financial statements verified by the office of university bursar, before presenting them to the vendor, who will in turn give them gowns.

“After verification, they should present their documents to the vendor to receive their graduation gowns. Graduands are reminded that gowns procured outside the approved vendor are illegal”

However, outside vendors also see this as a plot to fail their businesses where they would earn some good profits from the 4 day graduation ceremony.

At MUBS, the school registrar has been requested to also provide the vendor with space where gowns will be distributed.
