Bundibugyo district took the first position in cheating during the 2018 Primary Leaving Examinations-PLE. In fact, results of 645 candidates from 12 schools from the district were withheld.
These reportedly collected money from parents to facilitate malpractice according to UNEB and district authorities.
According to Dan Odongo the UNEB Executive Secretary, they received information from security indicating that some teachers had asked parents of the learners to pay Shillings 50,000 to facilitate the malpractice. Teachers were found writing answers for candidates on chalkboards.
He announced that the board was withholding results for 12 schools including; Bundikahuugu Primary School, Hahkitenga Primary School, Buhanda Primary School, Bundibugyo Primary School, Bundibugyo Junior Primary School, Bupomboli Primary School, Kalera Primary School, Njuule Primary School, Bundimulinga Primary School, Kiryuma Moslem Primary School, Izahura Primary School and Kihoko Primary School.
Now, John Byamukama the Bundibugyo District Inspector of Schools – DIS says from the day the results were withheld, he has held meetings with a number of parents who have confessed to giving money to head teachers who asked them to contribute a few days to the examination but didn't tell them what is was meant for.
According to parents of candidates at Bundimulinga Primary school, parents were reportedly asked to pay Shillings 50,000 'for help'. He adds that the District Education Department is already investigating the matter.
Justus Bitagalire the Bundibugyo District Education Officer - DEO, has also confirmed receiving similar claims from some parents. Advising head teachers from the affected schools to come out and explain what happened.
However, the head teacher Bundimulinga Primary school Tadius Tibemanya denies having collected money from parents to aid examination malpractice.
Byamukama explains that UNEB has already summoned the district education officer, the district inspector of schools LCV chairperson, and head teachers of the affected schools together with their candidates to give their side of the story.
