Makerere university lecturers at the college of Agricultural and Environmental sciences have been warned to return to duty with immediate effect.
A letter by the Vice Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe to Prof. Benard Bashaasha, the school principle, indicates that the college has not commenced lectures since opening of the university on January 21st 2019.
Prof. Nawangwe says that in a conversation with Bashaasha this morning, the latter sited an ongoing strike by staff members as the reason why there are no lectures.
However, the VC says the university management and council do not have any knowledge of the strike since no formal communication was made by members of MUASA who he says are ‘purportedly striking’.
He added that members of staff who use an excuse of the strike not to turn up for lectures are absconding from duty. Prof. Nawangwe therefore gave what he termed as ‘the last advice’ to lecturers at this particular college to resume classes with immediate effect.
Meanwhile, Prof. Bashaasha called a meeting for all lecturers at the college to discuss their stand which will in turn be communicated to the Vice Chancellor this afternoon.
