Three police officers who stole money from businessman, Michael Omoit are still in deep trouble after he rejected a five million Shillings refund.
The Kireka based police officers allegedly stole his money which was collected as exhibits on April 4th 2019.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nicholas Muyonjo Kireka Police Station Commander, and his two juniors; Sgt Joshua Jagule and Sgt William Kawooya are accused of stealing and sharing his money amounting to USD 4,700 (17 million Shillings) which money belonged to Omoit.
A fortnight ago, the accused pleaded to be released from Kira Division Police Station where they had been detained on the orders of the Police Professional Standards Unit (PSU). However, as a precondition for their release, the officers promised to refund the money.
But now, Omoit says the accused have failed to raise the whole amount and are trying to convince him, through his lawyer, to first take five million Shillings which he has rejected.
Trouble for the trio started on April 10 when Omoit petitioned Kampala Metropolitan Criminal Investigations (CID) Commander to force the police officers to refund his money. In his petition, the businessman also copied the Inspector General of Police, the Deputy IGP, the Internal Affairs Minister and Kampala Metropolitan Police Commander.
Muyonjo and his juniors first denied the charges before the Professional Standards Unit but later admitted to stealing the money when the complainant presented Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) footage from Palz Food Court in Kireka from where the trio shared the said money from.
