Uganda police officers at Entebbe international airport have arrested seven suspects over drug trafficking and recovered 16 and half kilograms of heroin in the process.
According to Luke Owoyesigire, the Deputy Police spokesperson Kampala Metropolitan area, two of the suspects are clearing agents.
He identified them as; Nansamba Zam Salim aged 28 years old, a business lady and a resident of Kawempe-Kulukadde, Kawempe Division Kampala, Luwemba Andrew Kwagalakwe aged 32 years old, a clearing agent with Confanent consult Co. Entebbe and a resident of Lugonjo Nakiwogo Zone, Musinguzi Elly aged 53 years old, a clearing agent with Answer Agencies clearing firm and a resident of Kabojja Kyengera in Wakiso district and Matcha Lobato Manbacar a Burundian national holding a Belgian travel document.
“On the 09th of May 2019, information was received from Das Cargo Export that there is consignment of plastic shoes, craft open shoes, craft lady’s handbags, beads etc suspected to be containing narcotic drugs, this led to the arrest of Nansamba Zam Salim, the shipper and Luwemba Andrew, the clearing agent, it was forwarded to aviation police station where it was opened and out of which 30 pairs of craft open shoes were found to contain approximately 06 Kgs of suspected heroin as per the preliminary tests conducted,” Owoyesigyire said.
He added: “Again on the 11th of May 2019, information was received from Das Cargo Export that there is an intercepted consignment destined to Liberia of lady’s money purses, back pack bags and ladies hand bags, suspected to be containing narcotic drugs concealed inside those items. It was being cleared by a clearing agent one Musinguzi Elly and the shipper was Agnuwa Theopius, Nigerian national who still at large. On the 13/05/2019, the said consignment was opened and out of the 60 lady’s clutch bags, 45(forty five) contained hard paper envelopes containing substances suspected to be narcotic drugs. They weighed a gross weight of approximately 6kgs of suspected heroin as per the preliminary tests conducted.
On the same day of 11th of May 2019, Owoyesigyire explained that the above quoted suspect who was intending to travel to Europe aboard Qatar airways was intercepted at departures hold baggage Entebbe international airport while in possession of narcotic drugs concealed in the false bottom of his coffee brown canvas suit case. He was forwarded to aviation police where the same was opened and 4.5kgs of suspected narcotic drugs to wit heroin were recovered.
The exhibits are to be forwarded to gal Wandegeya for analysis.
The suspects will be charged unlawful possession of narcotic drugs c/s 4(1) and 2(a) of the narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances (control) act 2016.
