Members of Parliament want a detailed statement from Government regarding the Bank of Uganda-BOU scam following last week’s arrests of BoU officials by the State House Anti-corruption unit and police after the Central Bank Governor Emmanuel Tumsuiime- Mutebile wrote to State House to investigate reports of a chartered UK airline which was carrying BoU currency notes, also carried private cargo belonging to individuals and agencies.
During Wednesday plenary, legislators demanded a clear statement following contradicting statements from the different government agencies about the saga.
Drama started on Monday, when Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga said that the police are investigating the illegal printing and bringing of unauthorized currency notes into the country.
But, government spokesperson Ofwono Opondo on Tuesday trashed Enanga’s report and asked him to make good on his statements. Opondo argued that the ongoing investigation was about the extra cargo on a BoU Chartered plane.
Hon. Patrick Nsamba the Kasanda North MP on Wednesday demanded that government be given a timeline within which to report back to the house.
The MP noted that the contradicting statements by from the Police, Government and Bank of Uganda breeds suspicion.
David Bahati, The State Minister of finance in -charge of planning insisted that there was no extra cash printed and asked the MPs to be patient and wait for the outcome of the investigations.
Hon. Bahati also said that government will report back to Parliament on Tuesday with a tentative report.
The Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga, in her ruling told Bahati to stick with the Tuesday deadline and bring the report.
