Seven dead bodies have been recovered while 30 other people remain unaccounted for after residents were buried underground after landslides hit parts of Bududa District early this week.

Multiple landslides which occurred after a heavy down pour in the villages of Namasa, Naposhi and shukururu in Bushika sub-county of Bududa district on Tuesday killed 4 people, injured 5 and left over 6,000 others displaced.

Today, the process of rescuing more people and retrieving bodies has been slowed down by persistent rains in the area.

According to Geoffrey Natubu the Bududa District Speaker, with the use of the current equipment like hand hoes and spades, the search for the bodies will hit a dead end.

The Office of the Prime Minister reports indicate that a review of household’s registers in the affected villages is ongoing to establish the number and names of missing persons and assessment of the number of houses, plantations, crop and livestock destroyed.

By Friday, many families were wandering in the neighborhood, seeking shelter in school and church structures.

Wilson Watila the Bududa District Chairperson says they already received some relief items from the Office of the Prime Minister which they will distribute to the affected families.
