The Uganda Police Force has clarified that a child who was injured during running battles between Police and People Power youths on Monday is not dead.
According to a statement released by the Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson Patrick Onyango, the child had no life threatening I juries and was discharged from the hospital.
"Our investigation team took interest in the matter and found out that the victim had non life threatening injuries and had been discharged. They proceeded to the home and found the victim okay" Onyango said.
He further clarified that the police officer ASP Andrew Agume was injured by a stray bullet and not live ammunition while dispersing the rowdy crowds on Monday. Onyango added that the rubber bullet was removed and he is recovering well.
"The public should know that we use non lethal methods of crowd dispersal. Our officers were mindful of close range attacks, avoided mass tear gassing but targeted violent crowds and ensured use of rubber bullets was limited" he added.
On the fateful day, police arrested 45 suspects, most of who benefited from police bond including three members of parliament, while 18 suspects are still in custody and their file with charges ranging from obstruction to disobedience of lawful orders under the public order management Act has been submitted to the Resident State Attorney for perusal and legal advice.
Onyango urged People Power members who had allegedly organized to breach peace, to commit to non violent approaches and observe the law.
