Residents of Rukungiri District and sorrounding areas who enjoy portlk may have to cross to Mbarara air Bushenyi for the delicacy, following aa ban on movement of pigs and their products by the Veterinary office due to a reported outbreak of the African swine fever.

According to Johnson Ninsiima the Rukungiri District Veterinary Officer, the most affected areas are Nyakishenyi and Nyarushanje sub counties.
By Wednesday 20 cases of African swine fever had been registered in Nyarushanje and Nyakishenyi sub counties.

Ninsiima explains that several pigs in the area are presenting with high fever, depression and loss of appetite, reddening of the skin particularly ears and snout, vomiting and diarrhea and that they are in the process of collecting samples from the affected pigs for examination at the animal laboratory in Entebbe for confirmation.

The Rukungiri District LC 5 Chairperson Andrewson Kateebire has urged pig farmers and pork dealers to abide by the directive to stop the spread of the disease, warning that  those who fail to abide by the ban will be arrested and dealt with accordingly.
