The opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) is once again organizing parallel events for the International Women’s Day.

Uganda will on Sunday 8th March 2020 join the rest of the world to commemorate the International Women’s Day which is running under the theme; “I am Generation Equality: Realizing Women's Rights.”

The National Celebrations will take place in Mbale under the theme; "Celebrating 25Years of the 1995 Constitution: Milestones on Promoting Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment in Uganda.”

President Yoweri Museveni will be chief guest as the ruling National Resistance Movement presents accountability of what it has done in line with protecting Women’s Rights.

Appearing before Parliament last week, Hon. Florence Nakiwala Kiyingi the minister of State for Children and Youth said Uganda has made progress on improving access to and ownership of land; access to information and communication technology (ICT); improving access to Gender Based Violence (GBV) prevention and 6. However, while the nation gathers in Mbale on Sunday, the FDC members will gather in two areas of Mubende and at the headquarters for parallel celebrations.
According to the party publicist Hon. Ibrahim Ssemuju Nganda, this day is celebrated globally to mainly take stock of what we have achieved in the area of gender equality.

“We will not as we have pledged abandon marking of these important international days to the dictator. The UN theme is “I am Generation Equality: Realizing Women’s rights.” We will domesticate this theme and accordingly inform you and the country” he noted.

In the past, the party has been known to plan parallel events to those organized by the central government.

When contacted, Fred Enanga the police spokesperson said they are still waiting for the party to officially write to them seeking permission as per the Public Order Management Act.
