Residents of Kitandwe Zone in Nakifuma-Naggalama town council in Mukono district were left in awe when one of their own locked himself in the house and set it on fire, claiming poverty and frustration caused by the lockdown.

Yuda Taddeo Sserunjogi sent his family of five children and their mother to his ancestral home in Kileku, Nakifuma Sub County after he allegedly failed to feed them. As soon as they left, Sserunjogi proceeded with his plan, locked himself in the house and set it on fire after their departure.

However, the man whose goal was to commit suicide, could not stand even a minute in the house and made an alarm that attracted residents to come save him. Sserunjogi must have thought burning himself alive was the easiest way out of this world, but no.

According to residents, the rescue team managed to break the doors and save the man. They also put out the fire before it spread to the entire house. Sserunjogi sustained injuries on his right arm and collapsed minutes later as a result of suffocation.

He is admitted at St Francis Naggalama Hospital where Dr Justus Atuhairwe says he was profusely bleeding but has since stabilized.
