As Ugandans take to Facebook with hashtags and artworks of pray for Kasese, religious leaders in the district that has been hit by a series of floods in the last one week have requested for food and other kinds of relief for those affected.

Several villages have been cut off by the floods while Kilembe hospital was also affected. Residents have since started storming the RDC’s compound demanding for relief since the extension of the lockdown a week ago.

Rivers in Kasese, and other parts of the Rwenzori region burst their banks, throwing thousands of families homeless. At least 120,000 persons have been displaced by floods that hit the district since Thursday Morning.

Now, Rev Ezra Nyongeza Mukonjo the chairperson Inter-religious committee of Kasese, says well-wishers need to contribute generously as the district is faced with multiple calamities. He notes that the government is now stretched to attend to the rising humanitarian needs across the country.

The council has given out letters calling on various entities including religious institutions and the business community to offer relief to those in need.

Sheikh Abdu Akim Juma the Kasese District Khadi says a number of people are stuck in their houses with nothing to eat, adding that several Muslim families are fasting with difficulty during this month of Ramadhan.

Sheikh Juma asks that those who can, contribute more relief to the task force to save hundreds that are living through a hard life.

Francis Kibira the Bishop of Kasese Diocese also notes that the current challenges including the coronavirus epidemic must formulate a national debate in regard to food security and economic inclusion of all Ugandans.
