Police and sister security organizations have applauded Ugandans for adhering to the COVID19 guidelines set by President Yoweri Museveni and the ministry of health.
While addressing the media in Kampala on Monday morning, Fred Enanga the police spokesperson said the Uganda is completing phase 4 of the lockdown tomorrow, and that the wider public has overwhelmingly observed provisions of the lockdown especially the curfew.
He also promised that the safety of Ugandans is guaranteed, due to the levels of compliance exhibited.
Enanga says there is much progress as government re-open the country, but that they have also received plans of protests from some sectors that are still under lock down. This comes in light of the planned protests by people purporting to be Boda Boda operators who had warned of serious protests across the country starting today Monday 8th June 2020.
“We understand their concerns, enduring the lockdown especially people in the boda boda sector, salons, bars and gyms, schools, places of worship, event organizers among others. We want to assure them that government has plans in place to ensure that they return to work as soon as possible” Enanga said.
He also revealed that some of the people whose sectors were recently allowed to return to work are exhibiting acts of noncompliance, especially those in down town at bus terminals where people are not observing social distance.
“The public should know that we are in the midst of a pandemic and any mistakes could easily lead us into a second wave of COVID19. We should therefore avoid any risky behaviors that could lead to a spike in new cases” he warned.
Enanga warned those intending to come out and engage in anti-lockdown protests, not to do so as this is very risky. He noted that the public health orders and regulations ban all forms of mass gatherings in this period as it could lead to mass arrests which is risky as it could fuel the spread of COVID19.
He says that police intelligence found out that the boda boda operators who intend to protest, have been joined by some taxi operators who have failed to meet the terms and conditions of having a genuine PSV and 3rd party insurance.
According to Enanga, these have been joined by political activists, some of whom have funded them with fuel. “In Rubaga we have learnt, there is one of those intending to vie for the MP seat who was fueling boda bodas into this act of incitement. We have re-enforced our teams, we have a number of checkpoints in place and our intelligence is on ground to ensure that we counter all forms of violent conduct during this period” Enanga said.
