An angry mob of fishermen has lynched a suspected boat thief after the court in Nakasongola released him from jail.

Police identified the deceased as Julius Kagolo a 27 year old resident of Kabasombwa landing site in Nakasongola district.

Residents arrested Kagolo and three others on allegations of stealing boats on Lake Kyoga and handed them over to Lwampanga Police post and later transferred to Nakasongola to face charges of robbery.

According to residents, Kagolo and others were behind the drowning of Jimmy Odong and Eric Lumu Mukasa all fishermen at Kabasombwa landing site in Lwampanga Sub County among others.

Kagolo and his accomplices disguised as Police Marine Unit personnel and robbed boats while fishing. But, fishermen were incensed to see Kagolo back at the landing site and they mobilized each other to attack him.

James Kwerigira the LCI Chairman of Kabasombwa village says that the fishermen surrounded Kagolo in his temporary house and destroyed it before he attempted to escape.

Fishermen apprehended the deceased and stoned him to death in protest of being released by Nakasongola magistrate court.

Policemen from Lwampanga Police Post later arrived at the scene but they found Kagolo already dead.

Nakasongola District Police Commander Patience Namara says that Kagolo was presented before a magistrate on a charge of stealing a goat and pleaded guilty of the offence before the magistrate on Thursday, prompting the judge to release him on caution because he didn't waste the court's time.

Namara says that police earlier on received allegations that Kagolo was also engaged in robberies of boats but residents failed to produce evidence. She condemned acts of mob justice and vowed to arrest the culprits.
