Two bodies have been retrieved from L. Bunyonyi by police and local divers. The duo is part of 5 people who drowned in the lake when the canoe they were in capsized on Wednesday evening.

Elly Maate the Kigezi Regional police spokesperson identified the 5 as Ayebazibwe Glorious aged 20, Kyogabirwe Pretty aged 9 years, Ninsiima Ronah aged 8 years and Ayebazibwe’s daughters, one 6 years  only known by Shanitah and another one year old baby whose particulars could not readily be established.

This morning, Maate said the bodies of the one year old and Pretty Kyogabirwe the 9 year old. He says the hunt for the remaining three is still ongoing.

Five people died and one survived when the canoe they were travelling in capsized at Lake Bunyonyi.

It's alleged that on the evening of 26/08/2020 at around 1800hrs, people who were traveling from Ndekura landing site in Hamukaka village kyenyi parish Muko sub county Rubanda district, drowned before crossing to the other side of Karambo village Ikamiro parish Muko Sub County.

The sailor, one Dalton Niwampa 22 years of Karambo village survived by swimming to yet unknown location.

The drowning came as a result of too much wind on the showers and excess loading because the canoe’s capacity is three people, but instead had six people on board.
