Police in Bwaise fired teargas and bullets in the air to disperse supporters of Kawempe South Member of Parliament Mubarak Munyagwa who had gathered at his offices on Nabweru Road to receive him after he had been nominated on Friday afternoon.
Traffic and businesses came to a standstill as security personnel engaged the rowdy supporters in running battles forcing traders to close their shops.
Despite Police firing teargas and bullets in the air, the crowds remained unmoved. They also blocked the road with huge stones and burnt car tyres, which disrupted traffic.
Police arrested Munyagwa at Bwaise for blocking traffic, when he attempted to walk in the middle of the road. He is currently detained at Bwaise Police Station.
Several traders say strangers entered their shops and destroyed some their merchandize.
They accused the MP of hiring goons to cause chaos in the areas. On Thursday, police arrested Makindye East MP Allan Ssewanyana and over 31 of his supporters for causing chaos in Katwe.
