A group of activists from Forum for Democratic Change-FDC party have been arrested in Kampala while protesting against Uganda's plans to construct roads in the Democratic Republic of Congo- DRC.
The development comes two weeks after an announcement by the Minister for Works General Katumba Wamala, that Uganda will construct a road in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) following a bilateral agreement between Uganda and the DRC to implement strategic infrastructure projects.
The roads are supposed to help improve mobility and ease business between the two neighboring countries.
However, the activists led by Harold Kaija the FDC Deputy Secretary-General argued that Uganda cannot construct roads in other countries yet its roads are still in a bad state.
Kaija called upon the Speaker of Parliament to pay attention to Uganda’s growing debts from foreign countries and find ways of clearing them instead of becoming a donor itself.
Dr. Stella Nyanzi, the Kampala Woman MP candidate also argued that it is despicable to see government prioritizing roads in a foreign country yet the country’s health sector is crumbling.
These were however intercepted by police at Kampala Boulevard building along Kampala road on their way to deliver a petition to the Speaker Rebecca Kadaga.
Kaija and Nyanzi were arrested along with Habib Buwembo, Paul Kisambira, and Bob Barigye. They were taken to Central Police Station.
According to Luke Owoyesigyire the Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, they were arrested for illegally holding a procession.
