Bodies of two South Sudan People’s Defence Forces soldiers who were killed during a clash with the Uganda Peoples Defense Forces-UPDF at the contentious Uganda-south Sudan boundary in Lamwo district have been handed over to their country.
UPDF soldiers shot and killed two South Sudan soldiers while one was captured alive on Tuesday afternoon during a heavy gunfire exchange while defending an illegal roadblock they had erected on Ugandan territory, 1.5 kms from Ngomoromo Border Post in Lokung sub-county.
According to the Lamwo District Police Commander Moses Akena, the two bodies were handed over to South Sudan security officials during an emergency security meeting convened between security personnel from Uganda and South Sudan at Ngomoromo border post on Thursday.
Three SMGs and another soldier identified as John Kwol Deng who was captured during the clashes were also handed over.
Akena says that the Ugandan security delegation led by the Fifth Infantry Division commander Brig William Bainomugisha and flanked by Lamwo Resident District Commissioner James Nabinson Kidega and Lokung sub-county local leaders tasked their counterparts to expeditiously investigate circumstances under which their armed men intruded into Uganda and staged an illegal road block.
Delegations from both sides have resolved to conduct another border security meeting over the Tuesday clashes on a yet to be identified date.
UPDF spokesperson Brig. Gen. Flavia Byekwaso said on Thursday, that the army will continue to pursue safety along the Ugandan borders to enable trade and peaceful co-existence in the spirit of Pan Africanism.
