As many Presidential candidates are getting arrested and thrown out of radio studios, candidate Willy Mayambala says he plans on sending text messages to all Ugandans if he can get their phone numbers from the National Registration and Identification Authority (NIRA).

Upon nomination, the electoral commission announced that all candidates were to carry out digital campaigns. That is; using radio/TV station, social media and SMS among others.
Patrick Amuriat and Robert Kyagulanyi in particular have already found problems with accessing Radio stations. Now, Mayambala says he will use SMS, a move that will not only allow him reach several people in all parts of the country that he has not reached, but also help minimize the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19).

Mayambala’s campaign team issued an apology for not going to some districts due to personal challenges but says they hope he will use the media to reach some of those places.

The Independent candidate says that he will now get to the data base of NIRA and be availed phone numbers of all Ugandans so he can send the text messages among others to vote him.

Gilbert Kadilo NIRA spokesperson however says that despite having people’s phone numbers in their data base, they cannot hand them over as this is against data privacy issues.
