Shock has gripped residents of Kyapa-Kangabwa village in Sanje sub-county-Kyotera district after three members of one family were electrocuted while trying to tap power from a high voltage line.
The deceased are; Lukia Nayiga, 35, and her sons Hakim Lwanga, 11, and Kassim Kasozi, 9 who were killed around 7:30 pm on Sunday evening.
Residents says it has been a routine for the family to tap power from a high voltage line passing above their home, and that on Sunday evening, Lwanga climbed a jack-fruit tree to access the power-line as usual but he accidentally tapped the wire where they hang clothes.
When Lwanga reached the ground, his young brother touched the bare wire and got electrocuted. Then Lwanga hurried to rescue him and got electrocuted as well. Their mother who had arrived to save them also died in the process.
Sula Mukasa the children’s father was away when the incident happened. According to Yoweri Lukyamuzi the Officer in Charge of Mayanja police station, it was too late to save the family by the time residents arrived.
The deceased were barefooted at the time of the incident. The bodies were taken to Kakuuto Health Centre IV for postmortem before they were handed over to their family for burial.
