Teargas and running battles are looming in Kampala as National Unity Platform, NUP party president Robert Kyangulanyi alias Bobi Wine mobilizes crowds to escort him to the United Nations Human Rights offices at Prince Charles Drive, Kololo, Kampala to deliver a petition.
Kyagulanyi is expected to deliver a petition against the rampant abductions by security agents at 10:00am, and he called for families and friends of missing persons to join him and walk to the UN offices today.
However, Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson SP Patrick Onyango says a letter from the UN indicates that Kyagulanyi is only allowed to show up with three other people and not a whole lot.
Onyango says that they have received information that the NUP president is mobilising his supporters to escort him in a procession to Kololo, even when processions are banned due to COVID19.
“I am calling upon all Ugandans whose people have been abducted to join us tomorrow at 10 am as we petition the United Nations Human Rights office over human rights violations” Kyagulanyi said on Monday.
Onyango has warned that permission to hold processions can only be given by the IGP and Kyagulanyi did not even ask for it, hence warning people not to join him.
Permissions to hold Processions are only given by the Inspector General of Police as per the Public Order Management Act which has not been granted. We want to urge the public not to participate in any illegal activities, anybody who involves him/herself in any illegal activities will be arrested and prosecuted in the courts of law” Onyango warned.
