Schools have today Monday 1st March 2021 begun re-opening for the last term of the 2020 academic year, with semi-candidates (P.6, S.3 & S.5) reporting for both Day and Boarding sections.
President Yoweri Museveni announced last month that schools would re-open in a staggering manner, with semi-candidate classes starting today, while other classes will join later on the advice of the Ministry of Education and Sports.
This is different from the candidate classes which were opened in October last year and directed to operate either as day or boarding but not both.
The move was meant to control the possible spread of Covid-19 which has since reduced. This prompted most schools to only operate as boarding to reduce on the contact between teachers, students and their families back at home on a daily.
In an updated COVID19 Standard Operating Procedures-SOPs released on Sunday evening however, the Ministry says that a school formally registered as day and boarding may operate as such but limit the physical interaction of the learners.
“A school that chooses to operate as day and boarding shall make arrangements to ensure that the two categories of learners do not interact physically”.
It remains unclear how this will be achieved since learners will share classes, but it has been welcomes by proprietors.
