As students begin heading home following closure of schools and higher institutions of learning by President Yoweri Museveni on Sunday night, students from Kyambogo University are in panic after a staff member and student succumbed to Coronavirus (COVID-19).
According to a statement from the University administration, Doreen Mirembe Juliet, a second year student of Bachelor of Teacher Education who has been in Intensive Care Unit-ICU at Victoria Hospital in Bukoto and Sharon Atwine, a teacher in the Department of Psychology died due to COVID.
Richard Keuber Manano the Director Human Resource in his communication to Kyambogo University community said Atwine was to be buried today in Kabingo Rwanshetsya Bushenyi District.
The development comes at a time when Kyambogo University witnessed a spike in COVID-19 infections among non-teaching, teaching staff and students.
The University Management recently followed advice from a team of health experts led by Dr. Monica Musenero -Senior Presidential Adviser on Epidemics and Pandemic to suspend all the physical classes and other activities for a period of two weeks. However, the two weeks will now be extended to 42 days as directed by the President.
According to Professor Eli Katunguka Rwakishaya the Vice Chancellor of the University, management was worried because of the overwhelming numbers of cases and that most students had cough and flu.
He also noted that there was failure of most Kyambogo community members to adhere to COVID-19 SOPs.
