There was drama in Mukono over the weekend when the Resident District Commissioner Fatuma Ndisaba Nabitaka was forced to prematurely end the belated international youth day celebrations over misconduct of the youth leaders.
Nabitaka cut short the celebrations after the youths started complaining about the district’s failure to fund their activities and events. The youth day celebrations were held at Ntaawo Youth Skills Development Centre in Mukono Central Division, Mukono Municipality.
The shouting and heckling forced the RDC who when she stood to deliver her speech, blamed the youth leaders for turning the celebrations into a platform for complaints and quarrelling.
This further drew protests from the youth leaders, who heckled her. She accused the youth leaders of indiscipline and undermining their leaders.
“Stop undermining us even though we originate from the same district. We know you and you know us but you must respect us because we are relatively high profile compared to you.” She said before cutting short the function. She then declared it closed in disregard of the remaining part of the program.
The RDC also promised that government officials will not show up for such events when invited in future, due to the misconduct of the youth leaders.
However, Florence Birungi the Mukono District female youth councilor alleges that the district allocated youth activities only Shillings 4M for the entire financial year which angered them.
But even this money did not reach them as they were later told that the district had no money and instead reduced their vote to Shillings 2M channeled through the district executive committee.
Birungi adds that unfortunately, they also failed to deliver the Shillings 2M.
According to the Central Region Youth Member of Parliament, Agnes Kirabo Mukono district allocated very little funds to the youth and even the little money allocated was not availed to the youths.
