Two people died at bars during Independence Celebrations in Soroti District.

The deceased have been identified as Stephen Elamu, a resident of Amoroto Village in Awaliwal Sub County and James Ojela, a resident of Akere Village in Aukot Sub County.

According to Oscar Greg Ageca, the East Kyoga Regional Police Spokesman, Elamu died around 02:00 pm while drinking at the home of Nathan Aboku.

Ageca says that they eyewitness accounts indicate that Elamu, after drinking waragi complained of hunger. This prompted his host to serve him food. But while eating, then he just collapsed and everyone ran away from home. The owner of the home, Nathan to Aboku handed himself to Amukaru Police Post since relatives had threatened lynch him and the entire family.

Several residents in the neighborhood were also forced to flee their homes for fear of retaliation from the deceased’s relatives.

However, Ageca says that Ojela’s death was also linked to food but in a different bar.

It is said that Ojela just fell down from the chair he was seated on and died instantly at the drinking place. He started drinking at around 11:00 am and died around 6:00 pm.

The duo’s death within the same location raised eyebrows in Gweri County until Sunday evening when the post-mortem results returned indicating that Elamu died of food choking when a piece of meat remained in his throat while Ojela died of a blood clot in the lungs.
