Police at Kawempe are investigating circumstances under which a 90-year-old woman was burnt to death in her house.
The deceased has been identified as Nanfuka Gertrude, a resident of Kanyogoga- Kawanda Central zone Nabweru Division Wakiso District who was burnt beyond recognition in her place of residence.
The incident happened on Tuesday (1/3/2022) at about 9pm.
According to Asp Luke Owoyesigyire the PRO KMP Nanfuka was staying with her 12-year granddaughter. The child narrated to told authorities that on the fateful night, the deceased asked her to sleep in the living room something that was unusual, as it had never happened before.
The grandmother then proceeded to lock herself in the bedroom, and they both slept off. However, on waking up, the child realized her grandmother's room was on fire.
She made an alarm which attracted the neighbors who helped extinguish the fire, but unfortunately Nanfuka was already dead.
According to Owoyesigyire, the fire mostly affected Nanfuka’s bedroom.
He says that investigations are underway to determine the cause of the fire. The deceased’s body has been conveyed to city mortuary Mulago.
