The Parliament of Uganda has temporarily been closed due to a shortage of water following works at the Ggaba water plant by the National Water and Sewerage Cooperation.
“Kampala Water regrets to inform its valued customers and the general public that water supply at Ggaba 3 water treatment plant has been closed off to handle an emergency fault. A team of specialized engineers is on the ground working tirelessly to complete works and restore water supply in the shortest time possible,” part of the statement from NWSC reads
The statement also indicates the estimated Time of Completion (26hrs: 3am, 5th March 2022). “Customers are therefore advised to store enough water & use it sparingly as we work.”
Now, the office of the Clerk to Parliament has Friday issued an internal memo to the staff including Members of Parliament to vacate the building until otherwise communicated.
"Hon Members, following the earlier communication about the shortage of water in Parliament and closure of sanitary facilities, the Clerk to Parliament advises Members and staff of Parliament to vacate the building," part of the memo read.
"The Department of Sergeant at Arms will provide updates on the progress of works as from National Water and Sewerage Corporation - NWSC. There will also be communication once the services are back to normal," reads the memo. The Parliament canteen was also out of bound.
The current waterworks have affected supply in Nakasero, Kololo, areas along Port Bell road up to Bugolobi, Mukwano, Kanyanya, Nabweru, Kawempe Mbogo, and surrounding areas. Also affected are Muyenga service areas of Acacia Avenue, Wandegeya, Namirembe, Maganja, Kagoma, Matugga, Nansana, Nakulabye, Bakuli, parts of the City centre and surrounding areas.
