Gulu Central High School in Gulu City has been closed and all students were sent home following last night’s violent strike over a football match which left one person dead.

The deceased has been identified as Rwotomia Gabriel, a senior three student of Gulu Central High school.

The decision to close the school came during an emergency meeting convened by the Gulu City Education department, security and Uganda Students Association at the school premises on Monday morning.

The incident happened on Sunday night at about 8pm when students at the above-mentioned school went on strike, following a decision by the school administration to stop them from watching the Manchester Derby.

The rowdy students started vandalizing properties and throwing stones at teachers, prompting the administration to call Gulu Central Police Station.

According to Ongom David Mudong the PRO Aswa River, a joint standby force of the Police and the sister forces from the UPDF responded to the call.
“When the joint forces of the police and the UPDF arrived at the school, they allegedly discharged 9 bullets to quell down the situation but unfortunately, a stray bullet hit the victim dead on the head who was allegedly on a mango tree” Mudong says.

Two UPDF officers, RA/194594 private Otoo Denis Ochora and RO/11337 Lt Oryema John Obits attached to Gulu 4th Division have since been arrested and are currently detained at the Gulu 4th division Headquarters for causing the student’s death.

The police homicide squad visited the scene and recorded statements from the school management and some students to guide in the investigation.

The officers also recovered the killer rifle and the deceased’s body which has been conveyed to Gulu City mortuary pending a postmortem.
