Vendors at Kireka Main Market were on Monday morning treated to a shock of their lives after a 48 year old man slit his throat in front of them.
Mubiru Dan,a local from Kira municipality, Wakiso district stormed the market area at 11:00 am in the morning with a sharp knife pretending to buy groceries before he cut himself abruptly.
Eyewitnesses at the market claim Mubiru first moved across several stalls asking the prices of various items without buying anything. They claim he looked calm and upright in his mind while he walked aimlessly in the market.
Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson says by the time police response team from Kireka Police arrived at the scene, Mubiru had lost a lot of blood as he was bleeding profusely.
Owoyesigyire says Mubiru is currently admitted at Mulago hospital for treatment but remains in critical condition. He says police is still investigating the cause of his attempted suicide.
“It is alleged that Mubiru attempted suicide by cutting his neck with a knife.The cause of the attempted suicide is still unknown but the incident will be investigated and more details will be provided as soon as they are available. “ he says
This incident comes just days after a primary pupil in Namayingo committed suicide under unclear circumstances. The deceased, Egesa Patrick aka Ege, a pupil at Goodwill Nursery and Primary School, was found hanging on a wire by locals, hours after he prophesied it.
Prior to that, a Senior four student of Wanyange SS committed suicide.17-year-old Josephine Namuli, a senior four student at Wanyange girls secondary school, located in Kakira town council, in Jinja district died an unnatural death.
Namuli apparently committed suicide by hanging. She is reported to have used a rope to hang herself in the dormitory.
In March 2022, a graduate from Kyambogo University committed suicide after failing to get a job. Brian Wetaka, who graduated with a Bachelor's Degree of Science in Chemical Engineering, in 2019 returned to his former lecture room block at the university and committed suicide from there.
Cases of mental health have largely been attributed to high suicide rates.Uganda has recorded 491,013 in the financial year 2019/2020 to 550,373 in the financial year 2020/2021, according to government statistics.
