Lyantonde School Closes after Fire Guts Physics Lab and Boy's Dormitory

The school headteacher, Kevin Kyolaba, says that the school has since been under surveillance both by Police and the internal watchmen and wonders what could have caused the incident.

St. Johns Comprehensive Secondary School in Kaliiro Sub-county is counting losses after a fire gutted a physics lab and boy’s dormitory on Wednesday night.

The fire believed to be an act of arson has reduced the physics laboratory block to ashes, in addition to damaging properties in the boy’s dormitories including beds, books, clothes, and other scholastic materials.

The fire started in the wee hours while over 60 senior one students were asleep in the dormitory. The students were however quick in responding to the fire attack as no fatalities or injuries were reported.

This incident comes barely a month after a student destroyed property worth over 40 million shillings in a violent strike.

The irate learners who were protesting poor feeding and corporal punishment, damaged classrooms, offices, utility supply lines, and perimeter wall.

The students also vandalized equipment in the science and computer laboratories and furniture.   

The school temporarily closed for one week following a decision by the Lyantonde District Security Committee and the School Board of Governors

The school headteacher, Kevin Kyolaba, says that the school has since been under surveillance both by Police and the internal watchmen and wonders what could have caused the incident.

Kyolaba says they have closed the school for two other weeks as they wait for the police to carry out thorough investigations into the cause of the fire.
