The Inspectorate of Government(IG) is investigating bribery allegations involving members of the 11th Parliament.

This development comes after the Bukoto South member of parliament, Twaha Kagabo was arrested after attempting to return a sum of 40 million shillings to Parliament on Tuesday.

Twaha alleges that he is among a section of legislators that secretly received the money as a token of appreciation at the residence of the Speaker of Parliament in June 2022.

Ali Munira, the Manager of Strategic Partnerships and Public Relations at the Inspectorate of Government says the MP will be charged and presented in court once investigations are completed.

“It is alleged that the MP had received a bribe of 40 million. The Inspectorate of Government received a call from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Parliament about the matter and we are going to investigate and if found culpable, will be arraigned in court,” Says Munira.

Kagabo on Tuesday morning brought before the Leader of Opposition Hon. Mathias Mpuuga a briefcase with money worth 40 million shillings. He was however asked to forward the money to its original source.

During the plenary on Tuesday, the Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, accused the MP of misconduct and embarrassing the image of Parliament. She consequently directed that the MP be presented before the committee for Rules and Discipline as the matter is being investigated.

“This House is not for playing politics, he has to show us who gave him the money…from where and what the money was meant for. It is our responsibility to protect the image of this House. When you start that kind of behavior, you will have to face the law,” Among said on Tuesday.
