The Uganda Police Force has explained the technique behind the merging of police posts in piloting the sub-county policing model.
Under this model, police have closed 129 posts countrywide in a bid to promote a unified base in sub-counties.
Fred Enanga, the Uganda Police Spokesperson told journalists on Monday that all regions across the country have been affected with police posts shut down.
Among them include; Sezibwa Region where 10 police posts were closed, Katonga 7, Savannah 15, Wamala 21, Kampala Metropolitan North 22, Kampala Metropolitan South Katwe 26, and Kampala Metropolitan East 28.
He added that this will see logistical challenges and manpower merged for better and more efficient units and that the changes will leave a police station created in each sub-county with 20 police officers, which will economically reduce costs and multiplicity of police stations.
“Instead of small posts that are not capable of ensuring proper service delivery, we want to merge them into police stations. Each police station will have traffic, Crime Intelligence, FFU, and scenes of crime officers as well as officers from specialized units,”
— Enanga said.
He further states that this will also reduce criminal attacks on police officers and stations, citing the most recent incident at Busiika Police station where two police officers were killed by unknown goons and their guns stolen. The incident also left three others injured, they remain in a critical state.
