Floods have cut off homes in and businesses in Bukwo Town council leaving more than 100 people stranded and counting losses.
The floods were caused by heavy rains that started at around 4 am and lasted for three hours on Monday.
The rains caused flash floods after River Bukwo burst its banks.
Bukwo Town council district councilor Fred Soyekwo says that people lost property worth millions, families were displaced and the main Bukwo Bridge was partially broken.
“The transport network is paralyzed, and business stranded, for all the commodities were soaked in the floods,” Soyekwo said.
According to Nicholas Kibet a victim of the floods, he was sleeping in his shop when he realized that water was entering his as he was, he jumped out of the window before the floods fill the shop.
He said that the floods destroyed all the merchandise and bedding.“I have not even opened the shop up to now to check if there is anything still of value,” said Kibet.
Satya Chesang another victim says, he has lost all the agro-inputs shop to the floods. “All my farm stock was ravaged and I don’t know where to start”.
Moses Chongeywo, the LCIII Chairperson Bukwo Town Council, partly attributes the flooding, to the diversion of the river, by the Chinese Construction Company that is constructing the Bridge along the Kapchorwa- Suam Road.
He explains that the Chinese dug a small diversion pathway which can’t handle the high volume of water when it rains, and water levels increased during last night’s rain, forcing the river to divert hence entering into people’s houses.
