Chief Justice Alfonse Owiny Dollo is against the retirement of senior judicial officers at the climax of their careers.
Under the current legal regime, Supreme Court and Court of Appeal Justices retire at 70, High Court Judges at 65 while Registrars and Magistrates at 60.
CJ Dollo made his point during a function to induct seventeen judges appointed by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni at Imperial Golf View Hotel, Entebbe.
At the same function, he was delivering accolades to former Principal Judge Yorokamu Bamwine and retired Justice David Wangutusi.
Dollo criticized the view that magistrates should retire at 65 years, High Court Judges at 70, and Supreme Court justices at 75.
He explained that with judicial work, the older you become, the better you are at articulating issues at hand and managing cases.
Meanwhile, the CJ appealed to the new judges to read widely and possess legal principles. He also called on the judges to execute their judicial duties independently without abusing discretionary powers.
Owiny Dollo said High Court judges are a court of record, and should therefore strive to deliver fully reasoned judgments that are unimpeachable.
