The Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety has revealed that 152 people perished in road accidents in a period of two weeks.
According to Faridah Nampiima, the traffic spokesperson, between February 5 to 12, 2023 alone, 92 people died while 300 others sustained serious injuries.
She told journalists during a press briefing on Monday that in the same period, a total of 408 road crashes were registered, of these 87 were fatal, 201 were serious, and 114 were minor.
Nampiima adds that the previous week between January 29 to February 04, 60 people died and 271 were injured in road accidents.
She says 90 percent of these accidents involved Boda Boda riders.
Traffic police have attributed the increase in road accidents to reckless driving, overtaking vehicles, drunk driving, speeding beyond the limit, and using handheld mobile phones while driving among others.
“The accidents vary depending on each crash. They are all unique depending on the accident. But the above are the major causes.” She says
A report by the traffic police for January 2023 reveals that in the first seven days, a total of 340 accidents were reported.
Nampiima said between January 1 and 8, 2023, 79 died and 245 were injured. Out of 340 accidents, 59 were fatal and106 minor with a total of 324 being victims of the accidents.
According to traffic police, the accidents were mostly caused by careless driving including drivers who drift from one lane to the other, driving while speaking on mobile phones, and overtaking in dangerous spots.
