Two people have died and five others were injured after a truck hit three houses. The accident took place around 11:30 pm on Wednesday at Kanibaizo trading center, Nyamirama sub-county, along the Rukungiri-Kihihi road.
The truck involved in the incident belongs to the China Henan Construction Company (CHICO), which is engaged in road construction on the Rukungiri-Kihihi-Kanungu route.
According to an eyewitness identified as Rudovico Tumuranze, the truck was transporting marram from a quarry in Nyamirama to Ntungwa Bridge. The unidentified driver, who was allegedly over speeding, lost control of the vehicle after hitting a hump, ultimately crashing into three nearby houses.
Tragically, both the driver of the truck and a child inside one of the houses lost their lives at the scene, while five individuals who were asleep in the affected houses sustained injuries. Tumuranze suspects that the driver may have fallen asleep while operating the vehicle.
Local leaders in Kanungu District have long criticized CHICO drivers for their alleged speeding, disregard for traffic regulations, and reckless driving practices, particularly with regards to trucks operating in densely populated areas.
