With just 17 days to the general elections, Ugandans in different parts of the country say they have not received any form of voter education.
A recent survey indicates that 48% of Uganda’s voting population does not know the polling date or month (February 18th 2016), while 2% know the polling month but not the date.
With such statistics, the electoral commission faces an uphill especially with new voters who may not know what to do in the box.
Last week, the first consignment of ballot papers arrived from South Africa where they were printed from, unfortunately, asked about the numbers of these ballot papers, the EC chairman could not disclose it, claiming he did not know, and had to first consult is technical team, for such details.
But that aside, candidates have managed to traverse at least all regions in the country, and are still on the move until February 16th, a date set by the electoral commission as deadline for campaign rallies.
Today, where are the candidates?
Ruling National Resistance Movement, NRM candidate Yoweri Museveni is still traversing the Buganda sub region, and according to the EC campaign schedule, he is expected to rally Ssembabule and Bukomansimbi districts. Independent candidate John Patrick Amama Mbabazi heads to Kamwenge district in western Uganda, Col. Dr. Kiiza Besigye, the Forum for Democratic change Presidential candidate will address rallies at Nyakishenyi, Nyarushanje, Kebisoni, Buyanja, Buhunga- kalisizo, Rwenshaka, Bwambara, Bugangari playground, and Nyakagyeme all in Rukungiri district.
People’s development (PDP) Party president Dr. Abed Bwanika heads to Entebbe, Kyengera, and Wakiso,
Independent candidate Prof. Baryamureeba campaigns in Kabale, Maureen Kyalya and Joseph Mabirizi are expected in Kanungu, while Maj. Gen. Benon Biraaro of the farmers party is in Kibuku.
