The Uganda police force spokesperson Fred Enanga says this afternoon’s episodes that led to the arrest of FDC presidential candidate Dr. Kiiza Besigye were caused by his resistance to use a route designated by the force.
According to Enanga, since Besigye was in a sizeable procession the commander, Abas Byakagaba advised him not to pass through the city centre, but Besigye objected.
Enanga insists the FDC iron man was not arrested, but that police offered to transport him home, where he would later re-organize and return to the city.
“Enanga: He was neither arrested nor detained. Police was able to escort him back to his home
The police mouth piece also says they were forced to use teargas after Besigye’s supporters became rowdy" and feared this would have caused unrest.”
He explains that it was a decision that the Police arrived at with the Electoral Commission that they both preserve the centre of the city.
Asked on the claims made by the Kampala district Woman MP that she was mishandled by police, Enanga said; “If Nabila claims that she was mishandled by our DPC that is something that can be investigated.”
