US embassy has issued a Security Message to its Citizens in Uganda advising them to stay off the streets of Kampala for remainder of today.

The embassy says this message is due to reports of police and military clearing the streets. “We also advise US citizens to continue to monitor local media.”

The message was carried in a tweet by the U.S Mission Uganda this afternoon.

The embassy also condemned the arrest of opposition leaders at FDC offices in Najjanankumbi, after a few hours of running battles.

“We strongly condemn the disproportionate police action taken today at FDC HQ in Kampala.”

Since the start of the week, the military has been visible on the streets of all major towns in the country.

Today, at least 90% of shops in the city center have not opened for business for fear of any kinds of violence, while the military can be seen patrolling by air, in cars and others on foot.

Students of Makerere University have also tweeted about the heavy military deployment in and outside their campus, claiming many have remained indoors all day.
